A successful theatre student is a complex individual who is better prepared to compete in a modern, creative, and collaborative environment. The Firestone Theatre curriculum is designed to provide hands-on learning that is directly applicable to other curricular subjects and to practical, real-world experiences. The goal of Firestone Theatre is to develop a holistic understanding of and a life-long love for the theatre in each student. This is accomplished by preparing the student for a life in the theatre instead of simply success on the professional stage. Firestone Theatre aims to involve the student in the entire theatrical process and also to expose the student to a wide variety of theatre experiences and career opportunities.
Adolescent students are too young to narrow their focus on any one particular aspect of theatre and therefore must devote time and energy to exploring all aspects of the creative process. The theatre student is required to develop skills and regularly pursue experiences in the full spectrum of our art form. The best theatre student is one who can demonstrate proficiency in multiple areas of the creative process. Just as technical students benefit from knowledge of and experience in the acting process, students of acting benefit with knowledge of and experience in the technical process.
The student who does not intend to pursue a career in the theatre will come away from this nationally-recognized theatre education program with skills and experiences that will make him or her more attractive to prospective employers and for admission to college/university.
Our outstanding theatre curriculum uses a variety of techniques to help the student develop as an individual, a citizen, and an artist. Each student is challenged to commit to the development of a passion for theatre that might last a lifetime.
Students in the Comprehensive Theatre Track are required to successfully complete two theatre credits per year. Students in the Technical Theatre and Design Track are required to successfully complete two credits that include specified theatre and art classes per year. Additional classes can be taken as electives as the schedule permits. Students who successfully complete these eight credits will receive a special endorsement on both their transcript and diploma.
The theatre curriculum is designed as a four-year course of study and is undertaken by most students starting in the ninth grade. Some students do audition and gain entry to the program after their ninth grade year. In this case, the student’s previous experience and course work will be taken under considered in regard to their placement in our program.
